Odontalgia or a toothache happens when the central region of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes irritated or inflamed. There are several nerve endings in the pulp that are highly sensitive. There are many reasons because of which pulp can become inflamed or irritated, some of which are listed below.

Toothaches can vary from mild soreness to an unbearable throbbing pain in your teeth or around your jaws. If you are suffering from a toothache, it is best to seek immediate advice from a dentist before the problem gets worse. Well, you can also try some natural remedies to relieve the pain temporarily.
Natural Remedies for a Toothache
1. Pepper and salt
Salt and pepper, both have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which are of great use when a tooth becomes extremely sensitive.
- Mix pepper and common salt in equal amounts with a few drops of water to form a paste.
- Apply this paste directly on the affected tooth.
- Allow it to sit for few minutes.
- Do this daily for several days until you feel relieved.
Garlic possesses antibiotic and other medicinal properties that can be very effective in reducing the tooth pain.
- Crush a garlic clove (or else use garlic powder) and mix with some table salt or black salt. Apply it directly on the affected tooth to alleviate the pain.
- You can also chew 1-2 cloves of garlic to get relief.
- Repeat this treatment for a few days.

Use of cloves can also provide immense relief from a toothache. Cloves possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anesthetic properties that help to get relief from tooth pain and fights infection.
- Grind 2 whole cloves. Mix it with little olive oil or any vegetable oil and apply on the affected tooth.
- Else, dip a cotton ball in clove oil and then rub it directly on the sore tooth.
- Or, you can also mix a few drops of clove oil in a ½ glass of water and use it as a mouth rinse.
Onions have antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that help in treating toothache.
- Chew raw onion for a few minutes to relieve the pain. Onion provides relief from pain by killing the germs causing infection.
- Or, if you can’t chew raw onion then place a piece of raw onion directly on the bad tooth or gum.

Asafetida can be used to treat dental problems such as toothaches and bleeding gums.
- Add a pinch or ½ teaspoon of powdered asafetida to 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Then warm it slightly. Apply the solution on the affected area using a cotton pad. It will give you quick relief from the pain.
- Or, asafetida fried in clarified butter can also be put in the tooth cavity for instant relief.
Swirl around inside your mouth the solution of warm salt water to treat a toothache.
- Mix ½ spoon of common salt in a glass of hot water and rinse your mouth thoroughly with the solution. It will help in reducing the swelling and inflammation, and also fights the bacteria that cause infection.
Guava leaves have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial properties that can also alleviate a toothache.
- Simply chew 1-2 fresh tender guava leaves until the juice starts working on the affected tooth. Alternatively, you can also use raw spinach leaves in the same way.
- Or, put 4-5 guava leaves in water and boil it. Allow the solution to cool down and add some salt. Use this solution as a mouthwash.
Wheatgrass contains antibacterial properties that help to fight from tooth decay and also give relieve from a toothache. Extract wheatgrass juice and use it as a mouthwash. It will absorb the toxins from gums, reducing the growth of bacteria and keeping the infection under control.
9. Ice cubes
Ice can help in alleviating the tooth pain by numbing the nerve endings.
- Wrap a small ice cube in a thin cotton cloth or you can use a plastic bag. Hold it on your cheek near the aching tooth for a few minutes. If you have exposed nerves, contact with the cold can cause more pain.
- Or, rub an ice cube between your index finger and thumb for a few minutes it can also help to ease tooth pain. This is an acupressure technique used in easing tooth pain.
10. Apple cider vinegar
Dip a cotton ball in ACV and hold it on the aching tooth for relief. You can also use, regular household vinegar.
11. Tea tree oil
Mix 5-6 drops of tea tree oil in warm water. Rinse your mouth with this solution.
- Alternatively, the oil can also be used directly. Put 1-2 drops of oil on a cotton ball and keep it on the affected area.
Fresh cucumber can also be used as a natural cure for relieving toothache by placing it on the sore tooth. A cold piece of cucumber provides fast relief to the intolerable pain of tooth. But, if you have sensitive teeth; do not use the refrigerated piece. Or, mashed cucumber mixed with salt can also be applied to the affected area.
13. Baking soda
Mix baking soda with a little water and apply on the paining tooth. Or, you can also use it as a mouth rinse by mixing a heap of baking soda in a glass of lukewarm water. Allow the soda to dissolve completely in the water and then swish the solution in your mouth.
14. Tea bag
After preparing a cup of tea, the warm teabag used can be placed on the sore area. The tannins inside the tea leaves are a natural cure to help numb the things.
15. Oregano oil
Mix oregano oil with warm water or olive oil. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and place it on the aching tooth.
Tips to remember
- Avoid unnecessary chewing of solid foods and candies.
- Drink acidic beverages with the help of straw.
- Avoid the direct exposure of teeth to ice as it can cause a tooth fracture.
- Brush regularly with a fluoride-containing toothpaste.
- The inflammation of the nerve of the broken or cracked tooth is very excruciating. To reduce the pressure in the region of a toothache, keep your head elevated while sleeping.
- Flossing must be done at least once daily.
- In order to remove plaque and food particles, floss between the broken or cracked teeth.
- Consume foods low in sugar and eat fewer sweets.
- Visit the dentist twice a year for a routine checkup.
- Avoid consuming foods which are highly acidic.
